Boulevard Neighborhood Association

Connecting Neighbors along Durango’s East Third Avenue, since 1984

The Boulevard Neighborhood Association (BNA) is a group of residents who come together to grow community and take action for Durango’s oldest residential neighborhood. We work to protect historic residential character, our schools, churches, and signature green amenities. We encourage civility and public safety, promote citizen participation, and educate and support neighbors in their desire to maintain quality of life within our City. We encourage you to learn more, and to join!

Since 1984… We Have a Plan!

  • City Arbor Day Celebration

The City held an Arbor Day Celebration at Mason Park on the morning of April 15. Five hawthorns were planted by the City forestry staff, representatives from the US Forest Service, and volunteers from Durango High School. As the trees grow, they will beautify the grassy berm beside the tennis court.

Thank you to BNA members, friends, and neighbors in attendance.

City Arborist Matt Besecker has the idea of making Mason Park into an arboretum. Recently, two larch trees were planted in the Park, so with the addition of the hawthorns, the idea is literally taking root. Beseeker also plans to remove six Siberian Elms from Mason Park, which would make the Park free of the invasive tree.

The BNA is committed to help preserve, maintain, and renew the unique green spaces along the Boulevard, from the beautiful tree-lined median, to Mason Park, the crown jewel on Third Avenue. We are happy to support Matt and the City Forestry crews in the work they do, whenever possible.

    City Council Elections April 1

The BNA held a forum March 9 for our neighbors and friends to meet candidates for the upcoming city council election.

Current council members running for reelection Olivier Bosmans and Jessica Buell were joined by new candidates Chris Elias and Shirley Gonzales. Kip Kosos, another new candidate was unable to attend due to a personal conflict.

Approximately 35 neighbors attended and listened to hear candidates answer questions regarding issues pertinent to the neighborhood and city, such as the upcoming sales tax extension, affordable housing and living wages, transparency and communication, and resolving good will with other governmental agencies.

After the question portion of the meeting, the candidates were available to meet individually and answer questions regarding their positions.

The BNA board received several positive comments from members in appreciation of this opportunity to learn more about the candidates. We encourage all to become involved in public processes in our community, and to vote in the city council election. Ballots are mailed on March 17, and Election Day is Tuesday April 1.

  • Malfunction Junction

Plans for a roundabout at Malfunction Junction is officially on pause. Regarding the MidTown Safety and Connectivity project, the City website currently states: “Due to design constraints, cost, and public feedback, the design of the Florida, 15th, and 3rd intersection has been removed from this project scope. The separate intersection design is not currently funded and will be designed separate of this project in the future with a to be determined timeline.” Attention and energy might now be focused on the Speed Management plan, a project important to the Boulevard as well. Learn more here.
